When you switch on a VPN, it creates an encrypted tunnel between your Mac and a server controlled by the VPN company. VPNs also hide your IP address, making it harder to track you online and harder to divine your geographic location. A subscription with KeepSolid VPN Unlimited costs $9.99 per month, below the $10.80 per month average for a top-rated VPN service. Norton Secure VPN is significantly cheaper, at $7.99 per month.
As with most VPNs, KeepSolid offers longer subscriptions at a discount. Plans are available at $60.00 per year, $79.99 every three years, or $199 for a lifetime (note that this plan appears to be on its way out). Private Internet Access does quite a bit better, offering a year's subscription for $39.95. I generally caution against diving in with a long term subscription at first, and instead encourage readers to go for something shorter and test the VPN on their home networks before committing. Notably, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited offers a weekly subscription for $4.99 and a quarterly subscription for $18.99.
Nothing is cheaper than free, and there are a few free VPNs that are worth your consideration. Foremost among them is ProtonVPN, the only VPN I have yet tested that does not place a data cap on its free users. KeepSolid also offers a free VPN product, KeepSolid VPN Lite. This product does not require creating an account and also does not have a data cap on free users, but does limit free subscribers to a single, pre-selected VPN server location. It also does not include all the features of KeepSolid VPN Unlimited. There is a paid version of VPN Lite, but subscriptions are sold per-device. VPN Lite and Unlimited subscriptions are not interchangeable.
Many VPNs have added additional privacy features to better protect customers. ProtonVPN and NordVPN both support multi-hop connections and access to the Tor annonymization network. Express VPN, Private Internet Access, and Golden Frog VyprVPN support split tunneling, which lets users decide which apps send traffic through the VPN connection and which do not. KeepSolid VPN Unlimited does not offer any of these features.
You can connect up to five devices simultaneously with a KeepSolid VPN Unlimited subscription. That's the industry average, but KeepSolid takes the unusual step of recording each device you use and limiting it to just those five. If you try to connect a sixth device, you'll have to log in and delete one of the other devices from your account. Worse, KeepSolid makes you wait a week before you can delete another device from your account. It's the most restrictive system I've yet seen, and one that looks even more draconian when services like Surfshark VPN allow an unlimited number of simultaneous connections. KeepSolid lets you purchase additional connections for an additional fee, but that's cold comfort. This alone is the biggest issue I have with the service, and it's one that has persisted for years.
KeepSolid provides 400-odd servers to its customers, fewer than any of the other macOS VPN services I tested. CyberGhost VPN offers the largest fleet, topping 5,700 servers. More servers does not actually equal better service, but it does offer more options for finding a server that works for you.
More important than the number of servers is where those servers are located. The more countries a service covers, the more options you have for location spoofing and the better chances of finding a nearby server while traveling. KeepSolid has 80 server 'locations,' which I count to be 56 separate countries. That's a good spread, but far behind ExpressVPN, which boasts 94 countries. The company says that all of its servers are hardware servers and are physically located where they claim to be. Some competitors use virtual servers, meaning the server you selected could be in a different country entirely, perhaps one you'd rather avoid.
I go into greater detail about the efforts KeepSolid VPN Unlimited takes to ensure the privacy of its customers in my review of the Windows app, but will summarize here. The company has an R&D office in Ukraine but operates under US law. The company only generates revenue from VPN subscriptions, not monetizing its users. KeepSolid has not undergone a public, third-party audit unlike many of its peers. It also does not publish a transparency report. The company says that because it gathers little information, it has nothing to provide law enforcement. KeepSolid does not log user activity or timestamps, and 'always removes your IP address after your session ends.' I think KeepSolid could improve in this regard, as other services gather even less information.
Hands On With KeepSolid VPN Unlimited
I tested KeepSolid VPN Unlimited on a 2019 Retina-5K 27-inch iMac running macOS Catalina (version 10.15). This particular machine sports 16GB of RAM, and a 3.6 GHz eight core Intel i9 processor. Keepsolid offers the app as a direct download from its site, which I tested here, and through the macOS App Store.
The KeepSolid macOS app uses maps and layered card elements to create a classy, and easily approachable app. First time users are greeted by a large Start button, which I greatly appreciate. It's one of the better macOS clients I have reviewed, not quite a slick as NordVPN nor as friendly as the bear-heavy TunnelBear VPN.

By default, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited will connect you to what it believes is the optimal server. You can drill down to specific servers, a feature I like, from the server selection page. Here, you can see the Workload for each server and also the Ping time if you initiate a Ping Time test. Servers are also broken down by which allow P2P file sharing and which are specially configured for streaming video.
There aren't many other settings or tools in the KeepSolid VPN Unlimited app, but it's worth highlighting one: Protocols. By default, the app uses the IKEv2 VPN protocol, which is new, secure technology. My preferred protocol, OpenVPN, is also available, along with KeepSolid's custom KeepSolid Wise protocols. Interestingly, the company says it provides WireGuard servers, as well. This is a new technology, one still considered experimental and not widely used. I didn't test KeepSolid's implementation, but I have looked at other WireGuard uses and was extremely impressed.
A leaky VPN isn't a very good VPN. According to the DNS Leak Test tool, the server I connected to in testing does not leak information and did change my public IP address. Note that other servers may not be correctly configured, however.
Netflix blocks VPNs wherever it can, and KeepSolid VPN Unlimited is not immune. In my testing, I was unable to stream video from Netflix while connected to a US-based server. Note that the app does provide servers specifically for streaming, which may work better, and that a server that is blocked today may work fine tomorrow.
Speed Test Results
Using a VPN tends to increase your internet connection's latency and decrease your download and upload speed. In my testing, I try to get a sense of that impact by comparing Ookla speed test results with and without the VPN active. The overall results in my macOS VPN speed testing were mixed, with no decisive winner across all three categories. KeepSolid VPN Unlimited had by far the best download speed results but had abysmal upload speeds. CyberGhost VPN had the most balanced results, staying well below the average results in all categories. Notably, Encrypt.me was the fastest VPN among 34 services tested using Windows 10.
While KeepSolid VPN Unlimited deserves praise for acing the download speed tests, I caution against purchasing any VPN based on speed alone. For one thing, your experience will almost certainly be different than mine. For another, I believe that overall value and protections provided by a VPN are far more valuable than speed.

It also deserves credit for acing the download speed tests, and for creating such a slick app. Those are counterbalanced fairly evenly with its weighty and restrictive device policy, which makes it difficult to manage the machines you can actually use with KeepSolid. The company needs to rethink this policy.
